Linux Kernel syscall Buffer Copy Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-99232, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing/syscalls: Use copy_from_user for the faultable syscall buffer syscall_copy_user_array() copies the buffer argument of faultable syscalls (write, pwrite64, ...) with __copy_from_user(), which skips access_ok(). Use copy_from_user() instead so a non-user address is rejected and the entry is recorded as faulted. It could be a security concern for machines that trust perf a bit too much.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves syscall_copy_user_array() using __copy_from_user() to copy buffer arguments for faultable syscalls like write or pwrite64. This method skips access_ok() checks, potentially allowing non-user addresses to be processed. The fix replaces it with copy_from_user(), which rejects invalid addresses and records faults properly.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's syscall handling and requires kernel-level inspection. Detection involves checking kernel versions and syscall behavior. Use uname -a to verify kernel version and dmesg for fault-related messages. No direct network detection commands are applicable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this flaw could allow attackers to bypass memory access checks on systems trusting perf too much. This might lead to unauthorized memory access or privilege escalation, compromising system integrity or confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest patched version to resolve the tracing/syscalls vulnerability. Monitor vendor advisories for kernel updates and apply them promptly.
