Description

The Download Monitor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Cross-Origin postMessage to Admin Editor in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.10 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the attacker to trick an authenticated Administrator into visiting an attacker-controlled page that targets an open Download edit screen, after which the payload is persisted unfiltered via the Administrator's unfiltered_html capability and later emitted verbatim to the frontend by the [download_data] shortcode's unescaped post_content render path.

Executive Summary

The Download Monitor WordPress plugin has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts via Cross-Origin postMessage targeting the Admin Editor. The payload is stored and executed when users access infected pages. Attackers need to trick an admin into visiting a malicious page targeting an open Download edit screen.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires manual inspection of WordPress sites using the Download Monitor plugin. Check for unauthorized scripts in post content or via the [download_data] shortcode output. Review browser console logs for suspicious postMessage events targeting admin editor screens.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary scripts into WordPress pages. When users access these pages, the scripts execute, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or sensitive data. It could also deface websites or redirect users to malicious sites. The impact depends on user privileges and site configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited. Organizations using this plugin must address it to maintain compliance with data protection regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Download Monitor plugin to the latest version. Remove any unknown scripts from post content. Disable the [download_data] shortcode if not needed. Restrict unfiltered_html capability for non-admin users.
