Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

n8n versions before 1.123.80, from 2.0.0 before 2.39.6, and from 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 contain a filter injection vulnerability in the Supabase node's Filters (String) mode that fails to escape field values. Attackers can inject filter expressions from untrusted input to read all table rows, update all records, or delete entire tables in a single request.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a filter injection flaw in n8n versions before 1.123.80, 2.39.6, and 2.40.1. It affects the Supabase node's Filters (String) mode where unescaped field values are inserted directly into database queries. Attackers can inject malicious filter expressions to manipulate queries, potentially reading all rows, updating all records, or deleting entire tables in a single request.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your n8n instance is running a vulnerable version (before 1.123.80, 2.39.6, or 2.40.1). Inspect workflows using the Supabase node's 'Filters (String)' mode for untrusted input sources. Look for unexpected database queries or errors in logs that suggest filter manipulation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read all data in a database table, modify or delete all records, or cause a denial of service by wiping out entire tables. This could lead to data breaches, loss of critical information, or disruption of services relying on the affected database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or destruction of sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face legal penalties, loss of trust, and reputational damage if such breaches occur due to non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade n8n to version 1.123.80, 2.39.6, or 2.40.1 or later immediately. Switch affected workflows to 'Build Manually' filter mode to use parameterized queries. Restrict access to workflow triggers that handle untrusted data and limit n8n instance access to trusted users only.
