Description

n8n versions before 1.123.80, from 2.0.0 before 2.39.6, and from 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 contain an authorization bypass vulnerability in the credential test endpoint that resolves project-scoped variables without validating caller access. Attackers can specify an arbitrary project ID in the request body to interpolate sensitive variables into credential test requests sent to attacker-controlled hosts for exfiltration.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-103252 is an authorization bypass vulnerability in n8n versions before 1.123.80, 2.0.0 to 2.39.5, and 2.40.0 to 2.40.0. It affects the credential test endpoint, which resolves project-scoped variables without validating the caller's access to the specified project. Attackers can exploit this by providing an arbitrary project ID in the request body to interpolate sensitive variables into credential test requests sent to attacker-controlled hosts for exfiltration.

The vulnerability allows ordinary members to access variables from any project, leading to potential information disclosure. It has been patched in versions 1.123.80, 2.39.6, and 2.40.1.

Detection Guidance

Monitor outbound HTTP traffic for unusual credential test requests to external hosts. Check n8n logs for requests to the /rest/credentials/test endpoint with project IDs not owned by the caller. Look for sensitive variable interpolation in these requests.

Impact Analysis

If you use an affected n8n version, an attacker with basic access could read sensitive project variables by exploiting this flaw. This may lead to data leaks, unauthorized access to credentials, or exposure of confidential information like API keys or database credentials.

The impact includes potential confidentiality breaches as attackers can exfiltrate sensitive data through credential test requests sent to their own servers. Immediate risks involve compromised credentials and unauthorized data access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to personal or health data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. Exploitation may result in data breaches, triggering regulatory fines and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade n8n to versions 1.123.80, 2.39.6, or 2.40.1 or later. Restrict access to the credential test endpoint to trusted users only. Audit project-scoped variables for sensitive data exposure. Monitor and block outbound HTTP traffic to untrusted hosts.
