Description

Ghost versions 5.2.0 through versions prior to 6.62.0 allow a remote attacker, without authentication, to abuse the Stripe Checkout flow to attach a paid subscription to an existing member, modify that member's name, and inject content into newsletters sent to the member. Depending on the recipient's email client, the injected content may be rendered, resulting in HTML injection or cross-site scripting (XSS).

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Ghost versions 5.2.0 through 6.61.0. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit the Stripe Checkout flow to attach a paid subscription to an existing member, modify the member's name, and inject content into newsletters sent to that member. The injected content may be rendered in the recipient's email client, potentially causing HTML injection or cross-site scripting (XSS).

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check your Ghost installation version. If it is between 5.2.0 and 6.61.0, it is vulnerable. Use commands like 'ghost version' or check your package.json for Ghost version. Monitor network traffic for unauthorized Stripe Checkout interactions or unexpected member account modifications.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could modify your account details, attach unauthorized paid subscriptions, or inject malicious content into newsletters you receive. If the injected content renders in your email client, it may lead to XSS attacks, potentially stealing data or performing actions on your behalf.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. It may result in non-compliance due to potential data breaches or unauthorized changes to user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Ghost to version 6.62.0 or later. Review member accounts for unauthorized changes or subscriptions. Disable Stripe Checkout temporarily if possible until patched. Monitor newsletters for injected content and audit recent member activity.
