Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Ghost CMS versions from 4.0.0 to 6.62.9. It allows unauthenticated users to bypass content restrictions by directly querying the content API to access gated posts without proper authentication. The flaw is due to incorrect authorization checks (CWE-863).

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Ghost CMS versions between 4.0.0 and 6.62.9. Use commands like 'ghost version' or inspect Docker tags if self-hosted. Monitor API logs for unauthorized content API queries to restricted endpoints.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can access restricted or gated content without authentication, potentially exposing sensitive information. This could lead to data leaks, unauthorized access to premium content, or reputational damage if confidential material is exposed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or regulatory scrutiny if such breaches occur due to inadequate access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Ghost to version 6.63.0 or later using Ghost-CLI or Docker. For self-hosted instances, update via 'ghost update' or pull the latest image. Verify the update by checking the version again.
