Executive Summary

Ghost versions 5.8.0 before 6.34.0 have an input validation flaw in the admin iframe that allows attackers to take over staff user accounts. Attackers with content publishing privileges can create malicious pages which, when visited by active staff users, lead to account compromise due to improper input validation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check your Ghost version. If it is between 5.8.0 and 6.33.0, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'ghost version' or check your Docker image tag if self-hosted.

Impact Analysis

If you are a Ghost user with staff privileges, an attacker could trick you into visiting a malicious page, potentially gaining control of your account. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, content manipulation, or further compromise of the Ghost instance.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations using vulnerable Ghost versions may face compliance risks if data breaches occur.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Ghost to version 6.34.0 or later. For self-hosted instances, use Docker or Ghost-CLI to upgrade. Remove unnecessary content publishing privileges for users to reduce attack surface.
