Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Ghost versions 6.20.0 to 6.57.0. It allows authenticated staff users to log in as any other staff member using only a password, bypassing two-factor authentication. The issue stems from improper session handling and insufficient session expiration, enabling unauthorized access to administrative functions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Ghost versions between 6.20.0 and 6.57.0. Run 'ghost version' in your Ghost installation directory. If the version is within this range, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, review admin logs for unusual login attempts or session activity from staff accounts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with valid staff credentials can exploit this to impersonate other staff users, gaining unauthorized access to sensitive administrative functions. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or further compromise of the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies
