Description

The MPG WordPress plugin before 4.2.3 does not validate that the dataset source supplied when importing a project is a remote URL before treating it as a local filesystem path and copying that file into a publicly accessible uploads folder. This makes it possible for users with the Editor role and above to read the contents of arbitrary files on the server, with the copied file then retrievable by unauthenticated visitors.

Executive Summary

The MPG WordPress plugin before version 4.2.3 has a vulnerability where it does not check if a dataset source for importing a project is a remote URL. Instead, it treats the input as a local filesystem path and copies the file to a publicly accessible uploads folder. This allows users with Editor role or higher to read any file on the server, which can then be accessed by unauthenticated visitors.

Detection Guidance

Check the MPG plugin version installed on your WordPress site. If it is below 4.2.3, the system is vulnerable. Look for unauthorized files in the uploads folder that may have been copied from arbitrary locations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow unauthorized users to read sensitive files on your server, including configuration files, user data, or other confidential information. Attackers could exploit this to steal data, gain further access to your system, or deface your website by accessing files they shouldn't.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations by exposing sensitive personal or health data. Unauthorized file access may result in data breaches, triggering legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage for organizations handling protected information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the MPG plugin to version 4.2.3 or later immediately. Remove any suspicious files from the uploads folder and restrict access to the plugin's import feature for non-admin users.
