Description

SiYuan before v3.8.5 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the getRefCreateSavePath, getShorthandSavePath, and getDocCreateSavePath endpoints that allows read-only publish visitors to learn unpublished notebook box IDs. Attackers with read-only or anonymous publish access can POST any open notebook ID to receive the global save-box ID and save-path template, revealing a hidden notebook's existence and creation time.

Executive Summary

SiYuan before v3.8.5 has a missing authorization vulnerability in three endpoints: getRefCreateSavePath, getShorthandSavePath, and getDocCreateSavePath. This flaw allows read-only publish visitors to discover unpublished notebook box IDs by sending a POST request with an open notebook ID. The system then reveals the global save-box ID and save-path template, exposing the existence and creation time of hidden notebooks.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor POST requests to the endpoints getRefCreateSavePath, getShorthandSavePath, and getDocCreateSavePath in SiYuan versions before 3.8.5. Check for requests containing notebook IDs from read-only or anonymous users in publish mode.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with read-only or anonymous access to published notebooks could identify unpublished notebooks, potentially revealing sensitive or confidential information before it is ready for public release. This could lead to data leaks or unauthorized access to draft content.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could compromise compliance with GDPR by exposing personal data in unpublished notebooks before proper safeguards are in place. For HIPAA, it may risk unauthorized disclosure of protected health information if notebooks contain such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SiYuan to version v3.8.5 or later to address the missing authorization vulnerability in the specified endpoints.
