Description

Server-side request forgery in the tool server and remote agent connection handling in Loom for AWS before 1.7.0 might allow an authenticated remote user to obtain the credentials of the application's own container role and to read responses from arbitrary internal network locations, via a crafted connection address supplied when registering, updating or testing a tool server or remote agent. To remediate this issue, users should upgrade to version 1.7.0 or later.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) in Loom for AWS versions before 1.7.0. It allows an authenticated remote user to obtain the credentials of the application's container role and read responses from arbitrary internal network locations by supplying a crafted connection address when registering, updating, or testing a tool server or remote agent.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SSRF vulnerability requires checking for outdated Loom versions and monitoring network requests. First, verify the installed Loom version using commands like 'loom version' or by inspecting package metadata. If the version is below 1.7.0, the system is vulnerable. Next, review logs for suspicious outbound requests to internal endpoints or unexpected OAuth2 token exchanges. Use network monitoring tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to capture and analyze traffic from the Loom process.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access sensitive internal resources, steal container role credentials, or read internal network responses. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to systems, or further network compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Loom for AWS to version 1.7.0 or later to remediate the vulnerability.
