Executive Summary

YesWiki before version 4.5.3 has multiple reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. These allow attackers to inject JavaScript code through unsanitized parameters like incomingurl, id, file, tags, and template. When users click crafted links, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially hijacking sessions or performing unauthorized actions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect YesWiki instances for versions prior to 4.5.3. Check for unsanitized parameters like incomingurl, id, file, tags, and template in requests. Monitor for unusual JavaScript execution or session hijacking attempts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to session hijacking where attackers steal user sessions to impersonate victims. It may also enable unauthorized actions on the victim's behalf, such as modifying data or triggering backend requests. Attackers can combine this with other vulnerabilities to escalate access or achieve remote code execution.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to the risk of session hijacking and unauthorized actions. Reflected XSS attacks may allow attackers to steal session cookies or sensitive data, which could lead to breaches of confidentiality required by these regulations. However, the provided context does not explicitly detail compliance impacts.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update YesWiki to version 4.5.3 or later. If updating is not possible, apply input sanitization for the vulnerable parameters. Restrict access to sensitive functionality until patched.
