CWE ID Description
CWE-121 A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function).
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Tenda AC9 router firmware version 15.03.02.13. It exists in the POST request handler at /goform/fast_setting_internet_set where the netWanType argument can be manipulated to trigger the overflow. The flaw allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or crash the device.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Tenda AC9 router is running firmware version 15.03.02.13. Use network scanning tools like Nmap to detect open HTTP ports (typically 80 or 8080) on the device. Send a crafted POST request to /goform/fast_setting_internet_set and monitor for crashes or unexpected behavior.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to take control of your router, steal data, or disrupt network services. It may also lead to denial of service, leaving your internet connection unavailable. The public exploit increases the risk of real-world attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to potential unauthorized access to sensitive data or system disruption. A stack-based buffer overflow could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, leading to data breaches or service unavailability. Such incidents may violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., integrity and confidentiality) and HIPAA (e.g., safeguarding protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Tenda AC9 router to the latest firmware version immediately. Disable remote access to the router's web interface if not required. Block external access to /goform/fast_setting_internet_set via firewall rules until patched.
