Description

uv is a Python package and project manager written in Rust. From 0.12.7 until 0.12.18, uv wheel extraction on Windows can process a malicious wheel in a way that writes a file outside the installation prefix, including an executable in a directory already present on the user's PATH. Non-Windows hosts are not affected. This issue is fixed in version 0.12.18.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in the uv Python package manager affecting Windows systems. It allows a malicious wheel file to write files outside the intended installation directory during installation. The issue occurs because uv incorrectly processes Windows-style paths during wheel extraction, potentially placing executables in directories already on the user's PATH.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects uv versions 0.12.7 to 0.12.18 on Windows. To detect it, check your installed uv version with 'uv --version'. If the version is between 0.12.7 and 0.12.18, the system is vulnerable. No specific commands are provided for detection beyond version check.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to install malicious executables in system directories or directories on your PATH. This could lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running uv. The impact includes potential system compromise, data theft, or further malware installation.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade uv to version 0.12.18 or later using 'pip install --upgrade uv'. Avoid installing untrusted wheels on Windows until patched. Monitor for suspicious file writes in PATH directories.
