Heap Buffer Overflow in Revoked Key Error Path

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-14316, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-01

Last updated on: 2026-10-01

Assigner: Fortra

Description

The revoked-key error path builds a human-readable failure reason using sprintf() into a heap buffer. The allocated buffer is too small for the final formatted message. When sprintf() writes the full message, it can write past the end of the heap allocation.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a buffer overflow in the revoked-key error path. The code uses sprintf() to format a failure message into a heap buffer that is too small. When sprintf() writes the full message, it overflows the buffer, potentially corrupting memory.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a heap buffer overflow in error message formatting. Detection requires checking for crashes or memory corruption in applications handling revoked keys, particularly when sprintf() is used in error paths. Monitor logs for segmentation faults or heap-related errors during key revocation operations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code, crash the application, or gain unauthorized access. The high CVSS score (8.1) indicates significant impact, including potential data theft or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or loss, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy). Non-compliance risks fines, legal action, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply patches or updates from the affected software vendor to fix the sprintf() buffer overflow. If patches are unavailable, disable or restrict access to key revocation functionality until a fix is applied. Monitor vendor advisories for updates.
