SQL Injection in Smart Manager WooCommerce Plugin

Description

The Smart Manager – Advanced WooCommerce Bulk Edit & Inventory Management plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'access_privileges' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 8.97.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This exploit is only possible on installations where an administrator has saved a role-based deny-list Access Privilege configuration that does not explicitly block the internal 'access-privilege' module, as this condition allows the authorization filter to implicitly permit Subscriber-level users to invoke the vulnerable handler.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the Smart Manager plugin for WordPress. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious SQL queries via the 'access_privileges' parameter. The issue occurs due to insufficient input escaping and lack of proper SQL query preparation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires authenticated access with subscriber-level privileges or higher. Check WordPress user roles for unauthorized subscribers with elevated permissions. Inspect database query logs for suspicious SQL patterns, especially involving the 'access_privileges' parameter. Look for unusual outbound database connections or unexpected data exfiltration attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from the database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. They could also potentially modify or delete database entries, leading to data loss or unauthorized changes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Smart Manager plugin to the latest version immediately. Temporarily restrict subscriber-level users from accessing plugin features until patched. Review and remove any saved role-based deny-list Access Privilege configurations that permit subscriber access to vulnerable modules. Monitor database activity for unauthorized queries or data extraction attempts.
