Description

A code execution issue in the Java integration in Apache OpenOffice v4.1.16 and earlier allows a crafted untrusted document to trigger executing arbitrary (even remote) code when opened by the user. This issue is expected to be fixed in version 4.1.17, which is in the release candidate phase. Until then, users can mitigate this issue by disabling Java runtime integration in the Preferences dialog. This prevents the attack. If this is not possible, or as an extra precaution, you can avoid openingΒ open untrusted files entirely.Β Once 4.1.17 is released, upgrade to that version to fix the issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a code execution issue in Apache OpenOffice versions 4.1.16 and earlier. It allows a specially crafted untrusted document to execute arbitrary code, even remotely, when opened by a user. The issue stems from improper handling of Java integration within the software.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves Java integration in Apache OpenOffice. Detection requires checking if Java is enabled in OpenOffice preferences and monitoring for suspicious document processing. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to run malicious code on your system by tricking you into opening a harmful document. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of your system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows arbitrary code execution via crafted documents, which could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration. For GDPR, this may violate principles of data protection and integrity. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information confidentiality. Mitigation involves disabling Java integration or avoiding untrusted files until patched.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Disable Java runtime integration in Apache OpenOffice Preferences.
  • Avoid opening untrusted files until the issue is fixed.
  • Upgrade to OpenOffice version 4.1.17 once released.
