Description

UTMStack before 11.2.16 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in IdentityProviderService.validateMetadataUrl() that allows authenticated attackers to make the server send requests to arbitrary internal or cloud metadata hosts by supplying a malicious metadata URL to the identity-providers endpoint. Attackers can exploit the POST/PUT /api/identity-providers endpoint with no validation of target host, IP, or scheme to perform internal network port scanning and access cloud instance-metadata services.

Executive Summary

UTMStack before version 11.2.16 has a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the IdentityProviderService.validateMetadataUrl() function. This flaw allows authenticated attackers to trick the server into sending requests to arbitrary internal or cloud metadata hosts by providing a malicious metadata URL to the identity-providers endpoint. The vulnerability exists because the POST/PUT /api/identity-providers endpoint does not validate the target host, IP address, or scheme.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SSRF vulnerability in UTMStack, monitor network traffic for unexpected outbound requests from the server, particularly to internal or cloud metadata services. Check logs for POST/PUT requests to /api/identity-providers with unusual metadata URLs. Use tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to capture outgoing connections from the UTMStack server.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can exploit this vulnerability to perform internal network port scanning and access cloud instance-metadata services. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive internal systems or cloud resources, potentially exposing confidential data or enabling further attacks within the network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may result in non-compliance with regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. Exposure of personal or health data due to SSRF could lead to legal penalties, data breach notifications, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade UTMStack to version 11.2.16 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the /api/identity-providers endpoint to trusted users only and implement strict input validation for metadata URLs to block internal or cloud metadata host access.
