Description

A flaw was found in oauth-proxy. The application fails to properly validate the destination redirect parameter (`rd`) during post-login redirection. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to follow a specially crafted link, resulting in the user being redirected to an arbitrary external website after authenticating. This open redirect can be leveraged to conduct phishing attacks or credential theft.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an open redirect flaw in oauth-proxy. It occurs because the application does not properly validate the 'rd' (redirect) parameter during post-login redirection. Attackers can craft malicious links that, after a user authenticates, redirect them to arbitrary external websites. This can be exploited for phishing attacks or credential theft.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unusual redirect patterns involving the 'rd' parameter in oauth-proxy. Check logs for POST requests with '/ ' or '/' in the redirect URL. Use tools like Wireshark or tcpdump to inspect HTTP traffic for suspicious redirections after authentication.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes potential phishing attacks where users are tricked into entering credentials on fake sites. It may also lead to credential theft or exposure to malware if redirected to malicious websites. Since oauth-proxy protects critical services like OpenShift clusters, exploitation could compromise user sessions or credentials across security boundaries.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to breaches of confidentiality and integrity, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized redirection could expose sensitive data to attackers, potentially resulting in non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security update for oauth-proxy immediately. If no update is available, disable the 'rd' parameter validation bypass by restricting URL formats. Temporarily block suspicious redirect patterns in your proxy configuration until patched.
