Executive Summary

This is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Unlimited Elements for Elementor WordPress plugin before version 2.0.21. The plugin fails to escape an icon value before inserting it into an HTML attribute, allowing users with Contributor access to inject malicious scripts that execute when the page is rendered.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the Unlimited Elements for Elementor plugin. If the version is below 2.0.21, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to verify the plugin version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Contributor access could store a malicious script on your WordPress site. When other users view the affected page, the script executes, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting users, or performing actions on their behalf.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Unlimited Elements for Elementor plugin to version 2.0.21 or later. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update can be applied. Ensure users with Contributor access do not have unfiltered_html capability to prevent exploitation.
