Exploitability

CWE

CWE ID Description
CWE-789 The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated.
CWE-1188 The product initializes or sets a resource with a default that is intended to be changed by the product's installer, administrator, or maintainer, but the default is not secure.
CWE-130 The product parses a formatted message or structure, but it does not handle or incorrectly handles a length field that is inconsistent with the actual length of the associated data.
CWE-248 An exception is thrown from a function, but it is not caught.
CWE-407 An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves improper handling of length parameters in Apache Thrift's Python, Ruby, Erlang, Lua, Dart, JavaME, Perl, PHP, and D language bindings. It includes issues like uncaught exceptions, inefficient algorithmic complexity, excessive memory allocation, and insecure default resource initialization. The flaw exists in versions before 0.25.0.

Detection Guidance

Detection involves checking Apache Thrift versions for those below 0.25.0. Use commands like 'thrift --version' or inspect package managers (pip, gem, etc.) for installed versions. Monitor for crashes or memory issues in applications using Thrift bindings.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial of service due to excessive memory usage, application crashes from uncaught exceptions, or potential remote code execution if exploited. Systems using affected Apache Thrift bindings may become unstable or compromised.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability involves improper handling of length parameters, unchecked exceptions, and memory allocation issues in Apache Thrift bindings. This could lead to denial-of-service conditions or resource exhaustion, potentially impacting data availability and integrity. Such issues may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (availability of personal data) and HIPAA (integrity and availability of protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Thrift to version 0.25.0 or later to address the vulnerability.
