Stack-Based Buffer Overflow in Moxa Protocol Gateway Account Management

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-86325, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

A stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in protocol gateways' account management interface. The vulnerability is caused by insufficient length validation of the `account_name` parameter when processing account management requests. An attacker authenticated as a read-only user to the webΒ management interface could supply a specially crafted account name that exceeds the size of the internal stack buffer, resulting in corruption of program execution flow. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to read sensitive information from device memory, including credentials, modify arbitrary memory contents, and disrupt device availability.

Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in protocol gateways' account management interface. It occurs due to insufficient length validation of the account_name parameter during account management requests. An authenticated read-only user could exploit this by providing a specially crafted account name that exceeds the internal stack buffer size, leading to corruption of program execution flow.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires authenticated access to the web management interface and cannot be detected through network scanning alone. Monitor for unusual memory corruption patterns or crashes in the protocol gateway's account management interface. Check for unexpected account names exceeding normal lengths in logs. Ensure all user accounts follow naming conventions and limit read-only user privileges.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could allow an attacker to read sensitive information from device memory, including credentials. They could also modify arbitrary memory contents and disrupt device availability, potentially causing system outages or unauthorized access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information, including credentials, due to memory corruption from the stack-based buffer overflow. This may violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., Article 32 on security of processing) and HIPAA (e.g., Security Rule safeguards for confidentiality and integrity of protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the protocol gateways' firmware to the latest version provided by Moxa to patch the stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the account management interface.
