Improper Cryptographic Signature Verification in Protocol Gateways

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-86326, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-02

Last updated on: 2026-10-02

Assigner: Moxa Inc.

Description

An improper verification of cryptographic signature vulnerability exists in protocol gateways because the device does not properly verify the cryptographic authenticity of firmware images before installation. An attacker with high privileges and access to the firmware update interface could provide a specially crafted or modified firmware image, causing it to be installed on the device. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute unauthorized code, compromise the integrity and availability of the device, and persist malicious modifications across subsequent firmware updates.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-86326 is an improper verification of cryptographic signature vulnerability in Moxa protocol gateways. The device fails to properly verify the authenticity of firmware images before installation. An attacker with high privileges and access to the firmware update interface could exploit this by providing a specially crafted or modified firmware image, which would then be installed on the device.

Impact Analysis

Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute unauthorized code, compromise the integrity and availability of the device, and persist malicious modifications across subsequent firmware updates. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or disruption of device functionality.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Follow the applicable Security Hardening Guide for secure firmware updates as provided by Moxa.
  • Restrict network access to the firmware update interface to limit exposure.
  • Enhance authentication mechanisms for the firmware update process.
  • Regularly update firmware to the latest secure versions.
