Description

The Welcart e-Commerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Settlement Notification Parameters in all versions up to, and including, 2.12.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The IPN endpoint accepts the 'rel' and 'option' parameters with no authentication, nonce validation, or signature verification, meaning any unauthenticated attacker can directly submit malicious payloads that are stored and later rendered in the administrator's settlement error log view.

Executive Summary

The Welcart e-Commerce plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts via the 'rel' and 'option' parameters in the Settlement Notification endpoint. These scripts execute when an administrator views the settlement error log.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications in WordPress pages or posts, especially those related to Welcart e-Commerce. Inspect the settlement error log in the admin panel for unexpected scripts or payloads in the 'rel' or 'option' parameters. Monitor network traffic for unrecognized POST requests to the IPN endpoint.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal sensitive data like session cookies or login credentials by tricking users into visiting infected pages. They may also perform actions on behalf of users, modify page content, or redirect users to malicious sites. Administrators viewing error logs risk executing injected scripts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information, risking compliance with security and privacy rules. Organizations must address it to maintain regulatory compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Welcart e-Commerce plugin to the latest version beyond 2.12.2. Implement input sanitization and output escaping for the 'rel' and 'option' parameters. Add authentication, nonce validation, or signature verification to the IPN endpoint to prevent unauthenticated submissions.
