Description

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.14 This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to delete arbitrary media library attachments, including administrator-owned files, from the affected site. This is exploitable by Subscribers when a Custom Fonts field is registered on the user profile page via Redux_Users::set_profile(), as doing so causes the required redux_custom_fonts nonce to be rendered into the Subscriber's wp-admin/profile.php page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass in the Redux Framework plugin for WordPress up to version 4.5.14. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to delete any media library attachments, including files owned by administrators. The issue occurs when a Custom Fonts field is registered on a user's profile, causing a vulnerable nonce to be exposed on the profile page.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Redux Framework plugin version is below 4.5.15. Look for unauthorized deletion of media library attachments, especially those owned by administrators. Inspect user profile pages for the presence of the redux_custom_fonts nonce in Subscriber accounts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could delete important files from your WordPress site, including administrator-owned media. This could disrupt site functionality, cause data loss, or allow further attacks by removing critical assets. The impact is limited to authenticated users with subscriber access or higher.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized users to delete sensitive media files, including those owned by administrators. Unauthorized deletion of files may lead to data integrity issues, unauthorized access to personal data, or loss of audit trails, which are critical under GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and accountability.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Redux Framework plugin to version 4.5.15 or later immediately. Remove any Custom Fonts field registration via Redux_Users::set_profile() for Subscriber accounts. Review media library attachments for unauthorized deletions and restore any missing files.
