Description

The Duplicate Post plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'noti_token' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.5.6 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires that the site owner has enabled the plugin's User Level Permissions for the Subscriber role, as this grants access to the i_saw_this_noti AJAX branch needed to deliver the payload.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Duplicate Post WordPress plugin up to version 1.5.6. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'noti_token' parameter. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users visit the compromised pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Duplicate Post plugin versions up to 1.5.6. Check for suspicious scripts in pages, especially those injected via the 'noti_token' parameter. Review user roles with subscriber-level access or higher for unauthorized AJAX calls to the i_saw_this_noti branch.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. If the site owner enabled User Level Permissions for Subscribers, the attack is possible. The injected scripts run whenever users access the affected pages, potentially compromising user data or site integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, requiring notifications to authorities and affected users, and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Duplicate Post plugin to the latest version beyond 1.5.6 to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, consider disabling or removing the plugin entirely. Ensure User Level Permissions for the Subscriber role are disabled to prevent exploitation.
