Description

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via User Meta Merge via 'user-mediaurl' Media Field in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.14 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable by Subscriber-level users who can store a payload in user meta fields such as the biography, session_tokens (via a crafted User-Agent at login), or persisted_preferences (via the REST API), which are then promoted to the site-wide redux_demo option when a media URL repair is triggered on the demo panel.

Executive Summary

The Redux Framework plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'user-mediaurl' Media Field. The issue arises from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 4.5.14.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Redux Framework plugin up to version 4.5.14. Check for unauthorized user meta fields like biography, session_tokens, or persisted_preferences containing malicious scripts. Review plugin versions and scan for stored XSS payloads in user profiles or media fields.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access can inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users access the infected pages. Attackers can store payloads in user meta fields like biography or session tokens, which are then promoted to site-wide settings when a media URL repair is triggered.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access to inject arbitrary scripts via stored user meta fields. This could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration, which may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) requirements for safeguarding sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Redux Framework plugin to the latest version beyond 4.5.14 to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until a patch is applied.
