Description

The Forminator Forms – Contact Form, Payment Form & Custom Form Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'postdata-1[post-custom]' Parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.57.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The required form submission nonce is freely obtainable by unauthenticated users via the publicly accessible wp_ajax_nopriv_forminator_get_nonce endpoint, making the full attack chain exploitable without any authentication or prior account.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Forminator Forms WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into web pages via a parameter called 'postdata-1[post-custom]'. The plugin fails to properly sanitize input and escape output, enabling script injection. Attackers can exploit this by submitting a form with malicious code, which then executes when other users view the page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress Forminator plugin. To detect it, check if you are running a vulnerable version (up to 1.57.2) of the plugin. Inspect WordPress sites for the presence of the plugin and verify its version. Look for unusual form submissions or scripts in pages that could indicate exploitation.

Impact Analysis

If you use the vulnerable Forminator plugin, attackers could steal sensitive user data like cookies or session tokens, redirect users to malicious sites, or deface your website. Since no authentication is required, any visitor could trigger the attack. The injected scripts run in the context of the user's browser, potentially compromising their account or personal information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. If user data is compromised due to the XSS flaw, organizations may face regulatory fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage. Compliance with these standards requires preventing unauthorized script execution.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Forminator Forms plugin to the latest version beyond 1.57.2 to patch the vulnerability. If immediate update is not possible, disable the plugin temporarily until an update is applied.
