Description

The Ivory Search – WordPress Search Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 's' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.5.18 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that the targeted search form has the 'Highlight Search Terms' option enabled by an administrator, and that the malicious search query returns at least one post result.

Executive Summary

This is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Ivory Search WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 's' parameter in search queries. The attack requires the 'Highlight Search Terms' option to be enabled and the malicious query to return at least one post result.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Ivory Search plugin for the 's' parameter in search queries. Check if the 'Highlight Search Terms' option is enabled in the plugin settings. Use tools like curl to test for reflected XSS by injecting script payloads in the 's' parameter and observing responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick users into clicking a malicious link, leading to execution of arbitrary scripts in their browser. This could result in session hijacking, defacement of web pages, or theft of sensitive information like cookies or login credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations may face compliance breaches if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Ivory Search plugin to the latest version. Disable the 'Highlight Search Terms' option in the plugin settings. If an update is unavailable, consider temporarily disabling the plugin until a patch is released. Monitor for suspicious search queries or unusual activity.
