Description

The Smash Balloon Social Post Feed – Simple Social Feeds for WordPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Facebook Comment Message via v-html in Admin Builder Preview in all versions up to, and including, 4.13.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts that will execute whenever an administrator accesses the feed builder preview page. This attack requires only a Facebook account to post a comment on the connected Facebook Page, with no WordPress credentials needed; additionally, the use of v-show rather than v-if means injected HTML β€” including onerror handlers β€” is evaluated in the DOM even when the comment section is not visually displayed. When combined with the lack of URL validation in the cff_install_addon AJAX handler (admin/addon-functions.php), an injected script running in an administrator's session can trigger arbitrary plugin installation from an attacker-controlled URL, which may result in server-side code execution.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Smash Balloon Social Post Feed WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via Facebook comments on a connected page. These scripts execute when an admin views the feed builder preview page. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the plugin's admin builder preview functionality.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Smash Balloon Social Post Feed plugin versions up to 4.13.0. Inspect WordPress admin pages for unexpected scripts in the feed builder preview. Review server logs for unusual plugin installation attempts from untrusted sources.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run arbitrary web scripts in an admin's browser session. This could lead to unauthorized actions like installing malicious plugins from attacker-controlled URLs, potentially resulting in server-side code execution. The attack requires only a Facebook account and no WordPress credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized script execution in admin sessions, potentially exposing sensitive user data. If exploited, it may violate GDPR by enabling data breaches or HIPAA by compromising protected health information through arbitrary plugin installations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Smash Balloon Social Post Feed plugin to the latest version. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable. Monitor for unauthorized plugin installations and restrict admin access to trusted users only.
