Description

The SupportCandy – AI Customer Support Ticket System & Live Chatbot Agent plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.5.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This exploit chain requires the 'Register user if not exists' setting to be disabled, which is its default configuration.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the SupportCandy WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'name' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised pages.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for the SupportCandy plugin version up to 3.5.3. Use WordPress admin panel to verify plugin version or run: wp plugin list --name=supportcandy. If installed, inspect for unauthorized script injections in user input fields.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect users to malicious sites. It requires the 'Register user if not exists' setting to be disabled, which is the default configuration, making many WordPress sites potentially vulnerable.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. Stored XSS attacks may expose sensitive user information, resulting in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SupportCandy plugin to the latest version immediately. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin until a patch is released. Review user roles to ensure only necessary permissions are granted.
