Description

The No External Links plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Log URL via /goto/{base64} Redirect in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is only exploitable when the administrator has enabled the 'Link Encoding: Base64' option in the plugin settings.

Executive Summary

The No External Links plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 5.2.0. Attackers can inject malicious scripts via a log URL redirect using base64 encoding. These scripts execute when users access the infected page, but only if the administrator has enabled the 'Link Encoding: Base64' option.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the No External Links plugin version 5.2.0 or lower. Check if the 'Link Encoding: Base64' option is enabled in plugin settings. Look for malicious scripts in log URLs via /goto/{base64} redirects.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could inject harmful scripts into your WordPress site. When users visit the compromised page, the scripts may steal sensitive data, hijack sessions, or perform actions on behalf of users. This could lead to account takeovers or unauthorized access to user information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to non-compliance if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the No External Links plugin to the latest version beyond 5.2.0 to address the Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability. Disable the 'Link Encoding: Base64' option in plugin settings if enabled. Regularly scan WordPress installations for suspicious scripts or unauthorized changes.
