Description

The DoFollow Case by Case plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content in all versions up to, and including, 3.6.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Comment moderation delays but does not prevent exploitation β€” once an administrator approves the visually innocuous comment, the stored payload executes in the browser of every subsequent visitor to the affected post.

Executive Summary

The DoFollow Case by Case WordPress plugin up to version 3.6.0 has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in comment content due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into comments. Once an admin approves the comment, the script executes for every visitor to the affected page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites for the DoFollow Case by Case plugin versions up to 3.6.0. Inspect comments for unusual scripts or payloads in comment content. Use WordPress admin panel to review pending comments for suspicious entries.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Visitors to infected pages may have their data compromised or be exposed to further attacks through the injected scripts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's privacy rules. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the DoFollow Case by Case plugin to the latest version beyond 3.6.0 immediately. Remove or moderate any suspicious comments pending approval. Consider disabling the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable.
