SQL Injection in WP Visitor Statistics Plugin

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-96267, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

The WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'fullRef' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 8.7 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This is a second-order SQL injection: an unauthenticated attacker submits a crafted referrer URL to the wmcTrack tracking endpoint, which persists the raw unescaped value into the wp_logVisit table, and the injection is triggered when an administrator next views the Traffic Sources dashboard.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a second-order SQL injection in the WP Visitor Statistics plugin for WordPress. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit it by submitting a crafted referrer URL to the tracking endpoint. The raw unescaped value is stored in the database and later triggers malicious SQL queries when an administrator views the Traffic Sources dashboard. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient escaping of the 'fullRef' parameter and lack of proper SQL query preparation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the WP Visitor Statistics plugin up to version 8.7 for suspicious entries in the wp_logVisit table. Check server logs for requests containing the 'fullRef' parameter with SQL-like payloads such as quotes or semicolons.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can extract sensitive information from the database, such as user credentials, personal data, or other confidential details. Since the attack is triggered when an admin views the dashboard, it can lead to data breaches without requiring direct access to the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if sensitive data is exposed.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Visitor Statistics plugin to the latest version beyond 8.7. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Review database logs for signs of exploitation and consider revoking unauthorized access.
