Description

The Awesome Support – WordPress HelpDesk & Support Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'gdpr-data' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 6.4.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable by Subscriber-level users against other accounts because the AJAX handlers accept an arbitrary gdpr-user ID without verifying it belongs to the requester, and the required wpas-gdpr-nonce is emitted via wp_localize_script to every logged-in user on frontend plugin pages and on /wp-admin/profile.php.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Awesome Support – WordPress HelpDesk & Support Plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'gdpr-data' parameter. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Awesome Support plugin versions up to and including 6.4.0. Inspect WordPress sites for unauthorized scripts in pages or user profiles, particularly those using the 'gdpr-data' parameter. Review server logs for suspicious AJAX requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with 'action=wpas_gdpr_save_data'.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could execute arbitrary web scripts in pages visited by users. Since the AJAX handlers accept any gdpr-user ID without verification, Subscriber-level users can target other accounts. The scripts run when users access infected pages, potentially stealing data or performing actions on their behalf.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles. It may also compromise protected health information, potentially breaching HIPAA compliance if exploited in healthcare contexts.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Awesome Support plugin to the latest version beyond 6.4.0. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access if not required. Implement input sanitization for the 'gdpr-data' parameter and validate user permissions for AJAX handlers. Monitor for and remove any injected scripts in pages or user profiles.
