Description

The Download Manager plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Display Name in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.70 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the [wpdm_edit_profile] shortcode to be present on a front-end page accessible to Subscriber-level users, who can then submit a multiply entity-encoded payload via the display name field to bypass sanitization.

Executive Summary

The Download Manager plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the Display Name field. This allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The attack requires the [wpdm_edit_profile] shortcode to be present on a front-end page accessible to subscribers.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Download Manager plugin up to version 3.3.70. Inspect WordPress user profiles for suspicious display names containing encoded payloads. Look for the [wpdm_edit_profile] shortcode on accessible front-end pages.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could execute arbitrary web scripts in your browser when you access an infected page. This could lead to session hijacking, stealing cookies, or performing actions on your behalf. The impact depends on user privileges and plugin configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the Display Name field, which could lead to unauthorized data access or manipulation. For GDPR, this could result in unauthorized processing of personal data, violating Article 5 and 32. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information integrity or confidentiality if exploited in healthcare-related WordPress sites.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Download Manager plugin to the latest version beyond 3.3.70.
  • Remove or restrict access to the [wpdm_edit_profile] shortcode if not needed.
  • Review user profiles for unauthorized script injections in display names.
