Description

The Visitor Traffic Real Time Statistics plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via 'X-Real-IP' HTTP Header in all versions up to, and including, 8.16 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires no authentication, no nonce, and no capability β€” the wp_ajax_nopriv_ahcfree_track_visitor endpoint accepts the forged X-Real-IP header from any unauthenticated HTTP request and stores the entity-encoded payload verbatim in the database.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Visitor Traffic Real Time Statistics WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'X-Real-IP' HTTP header. The scripts execute when users access infected pages. The issue arises because the plugin fails to properly sanitize input and escape output, storing the payload directly in the database.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Visitor Traffic Real Time Statistics plugin version 8.16 or lower. Inspect HTTP headers for forged X-Real-IP values containing scripts. Review database entries for stored payloads in tracked visitor data.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. Since no authentication is required, any visitor to your site could trigger the injected scripts. The stored payload persists in the database, affecting all users who access the compromised pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If attackers steal personal or health information via the XSS flaw, organizations may face fines and legal consequences for non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Visitor Traffic Real Time Statistics plugin to the latest version. Implement input sanitization for X-Real-IP headers. Monitor for unusual script injections in web pages or database entries.
