Cisco Warns of Active Exploitation of Hardcoded Password Vulnerability in Secure Firewall Management Center
After a short summer break, we're back with our regular cybersecurity updates. Unfortunately, the first major advisory upon our return concerns an actively exploited vulnerability in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC).
The vulnerability, CVE-2026-20316, allows an unauthenticated attacker to log in using a hardcoded low-privileged account and gain access to sensitive information. While the vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 5.3 (Medium), Cisco has assigned it a High Security Impact Rating because it can be chained with other vulnerabilities to achieve privilege escalation. Cisco has also confirmed that the vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild.
Why this matters
Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center is the central management platform for Cisco firewalls in many enterprise environments. A compromise of this system can expose sensitive configuration data and may provide attackers with a foothold for further attacks against an organization's network.
Cisco also released patches for CVE-2026-20079, a separate authentication bypass vulnerability with a maximum CVSS score of 10.0. Although Cisco is not currently aware of active exploitation of that flaw, the combination of both vulnerabilities makes timely patching particularly important.
How to determine if you're affected
Besides upgrading to one of the available hotfixes, Cisco recommends checking affected systems for Indicators of Compromise (IoCs). One of the published detection methods is to inspect the system log for suspicious use of /var/tmp/license.tmp by running the following command:
cat /var/log/messages | grep license
If the output references /var/tmp/license.tmp, Cisco advises treating the appliance as potentially compromised. In that situation, all user credentials, cryptographic keys, and certificates associated with the FMC appliance should be rotated immediately.
