Assigner: TeamViewer Germany GmbH

Description

An integer overflow in the remote-control screen processing component of TeamViewer clients (Full Client, Portable and Remote Control App) prior to version 15.83 may allow a malicious remote host to cause a denial of service or, depending on the platform, potentially execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the viewer process. CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow in the remote-control screen processing component of TeamViewer clients before version 15.83. It may allow a malicious remote host to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the viewer process. Exploitation requires a user to establish a remote-control session to an attacker-controlled or compromised host.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking TeamViewer client versions prior to 15.83. Use commands like 'teamviewer --version' on Windows/Linux or check the app version on macOS. Compare the output against version 15.83 or later.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to crash your TeamViewer session or run malicious code on your device with the same permissions as the TeamViewer process. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of your system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or code execution on systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. A denial of service could also disrupt regulated operations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update TeamViewer clients to version 15.83 or later immediately. Disable remote-control sessions until updated. Monitor network traffic for suspicious remote-control connections.
