Description

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the screen-image decoder of TeamViewer Full Client for Linux and macOS prior to version 15.83 allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code by supplying crafted screen-image data during a remote-control session. The vulnerability can also be exploited by persuading a user to open a specially crafted TeamViewer session recording (.tvs). Missing destination bounds checking in the decoder allows crafted screen-image data to cause an out-of-bounds write to the image buffer. Exploitation requires user interaction.

Executive Summary

This is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in TeamViewer's screen-image decoder for Linux and macOS versions before 15.83. It allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code by sending specially crafted screen-image data during a remote-control session or tricking a user into opening a malicious session recording file (.tvs). The issue occurs because the decoder fails to check destination buffer bounds, enabling the crafted data to overwrite memory outside the intended image buffer.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the installed version of TeamViewer Full Client for Linux or macOS. If the version is prior to 15.83, the system is vulnerable. No specific commands are provided in the context to detect exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to run malicious code on your system with the same privileges as the TeamViewer application. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, installation of malware, or system compromise. Exploitation requires user interaction, such as opening a malicious file or accepting a remote session from an attacker.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution and potential data breaches during remote sessions, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update TeamViewer Full Client for Linux and macOS to version 15.83 or later. Avoid opening untrusted TeamViewer session recordings (.tvs) files. Ensure users are cautious of remote-control session requests from unknown sources.
